the journey of a thousand miles ...

begins with a single step.  When corporations do the right thing, they should be recognized for that, so here are a couple of interesting tidbits.

TakeBackMyTV is advocating environmental responsibility with regard to the Digital TV Broadcasting changes coming in 2009.  They report that Sony has signed an enviromental pledge:

Sony will take back any used product with Sony’s name on it, at no cost to consumers, and will eventually reach a goal of recycling a pound of old electronicsg for every new pound of products sold.

Economic Stimulus begins at home.

April 15th is fast approaching, and with it the last chance to make IRA contributions for 2007.  For many Americans, your tax dollars can be used to improve your retirement savings, via the Saver's Credit.

The saver’s credit can be claimed by:

   *  Married couples filing jointly with incomes up to $52,000 in 2007 or $53,000 in 2008;

   *  Heads of Household with incomes up to $39,000 in 2007 or $39,750 in 2008; and

   *  Married individuals filing separately and singles with incomes up to $26,000 in 2007 or $26,500 in 2008.

The amount of the credit ranges from 10% to 50%, based upon the actual income of the person filing.

If you know of anyone who qualifies for this credit, please help them to take advantage of it.  Even a fairly small gift can have a big impact when used in this way.

Recent news reports have included significant coverage of the two hurricanes currently battering Mexico, Felix and Henriette, but there is far more disturbing news which has not been widely reported.

Mexico provides over 10% of all Unites States oil imports.  President Felipe Calderon, in his State of Mexico Address makes some very disturbing claims as to the future of Mexican oil production.

Nanny State Democrats

In the Midday Comment Thread, kos referenced a news article that the Illinois Sexually Explicit Video Game Law (SEVGL), struck down by a lower court, has had that ruling affirmed in Federal Court.

In pointing out the complete waste of the $1M spent on the defense of this law, a larger elephant in the room was completely ignored.

Linda Chapa La Via introduced this legislation.  She is one of the challengers for Dennis Hastert's seat in IL-14 in 2008.

Criminalizing this kind of behavior is a pointless and harmful act of a nanny state.  Parents should be strongly involved in understanding and monitoring what their children watch and play.  Their failure or indifference does not drive any compelling interest of state policy.

Voting with your ... wheels.

Since I've seen people ask, I figured I would post a  roundup of the numbers for the US auto market.  Numbers included from articles in the Detroit Free Press and  Bloomberg below the fold.

Short summary:  Car sales are up, Truck sales are down, and the Big Three and Europe are getting dropped for Asian manufacturers.  Hybrids total 0.4% for the year.

It takes a nation of millions...

I attended the 2004 SOA protest at Fort Benning, GA, this past weekend. It was one of the most energizing experiences I have had in years. I attended with a delegation from the Chicago Religious Leadership Network. (CRLN)

"Republican voices".

One of the contrasts of the 2004 election was a contrast of quotations.  Everyone knew John Kerry's "I voted for the 87 billion before I voted against it" line, but nobody knew George Bush's "I'm not Concerned about Osama bin Laden" line.  I propose that we monitor the press conferences and video appearances of all state and national level elected republican officials.  The selected stupidest, most painful, most divisive quotes of the week then become radio and tv ads which run in their home districts.
